Our green treated timber sleepers are ideal for garden projects such as raised beds, short retaining walls, border edging and other small garden decor. Made from a sturdy 100mm x 200mm timber in a 2.4m length, each of these wooden sleepers is treated to UC4, meaning it is suitable for direct contact with the ground. Due to this treatment, the sleepers have a slight green tinge as opposed to our Brown Treated Sleepers

  • FSC Certified Timber
  • Suitable for outdoor projects
  • Sturdy size and pressure treated - ideal for raised beds
  • Can be laid in direct contact with the ground
  • Incised for greater treatment penetration

What are Timber Sleepers used for?

Railway sleepers are traditionally a length of timber that "sleeps" or supports the rails in railway tracks. However, due to their strength and size, nowadays wooden sleepers are popular for use in garden projects such as raised beds, short retaining walls, terracing, steps and other decorative elements. Though traditionally made with oak, modern railway sleepers are now usually made with coniferous wood such as spruce or redwood, as a more versatile and cost effective solution that still has significant longevity.

What does Incised Mean?

Incised timber is timber that is treated in combination with small incisions along the exterior of the timber to allow any treatments to penetrate further and therefore have more effective resistance to rot and pests. As our timber sleepers are treated to UC4, this particular treatment generally requires incisions to meet this standard of treatment, allowing the treatment to penetrate into the inner “heartwood” of a length of timber. Timber treated to UC4 allows these timber sleepers to be used in direct contact with the ground such as raised beds, and is expected to last roughly 15 years.

What Lengths Do Wooden Sleepers Come In?

Our wooden sleepers come in a standard length of 2.4m. If you are cross-cutting your sleepers to size to fit any outdoor project, it is strongly advised to further treat the cut ends to ensure sufficient moisture and pest resistance, and avoid placing cut ends in direct contact with the ground.
