What is MDF Board?

Also known as Medium Density Fibreboard, MDF Board is an engineered wood board made from wood fibres that are mixed with a binder and pressed to form a smooth, flat board. It is in the same category as chipboard, OSB and hardboard, but with a smoother finish. It’s composition makes it easy to cut to size and easy to decorate, and it is dense enough to provide a sturdy finish to most household projects.

What is MDF Used For?

MDF Board is an extremely popular product for DIY projects, and is often an ideal alternative to plywood where a smooth surface for painting is desired. Some common uses for MDF are furniture making (such as shelving, wardrobes, cabinets, etc), enclosures for utilities such as piping and cabling, moulding and trims including decorative panelling, and a myriad of other uses.

One place where MDF should not be used is where it is likely to come into regular contact with moisture. It can be treated, sealed and painted in uses such as kitchen and bathroom cabinets, but untreated MDF is prone to swelling when in contact with moisture. In these scenarios, OSB Board or Marine Ply may be a more suitable alternative.
