What is Multifoil insulation?

Multifoil insulation is a type of thermal insulation material composed of several layers of reflective foil, often with additional materials such as foam or bubble wrap sandwiched in between. The reflective foil layers work by reflecting radiant heat, preventing it from entering or escaping a building, thus helping to maintain desired temperatures and improve energy efficiency.

This type of insulation is popular for its lightweight and flexible nature, making it ideal for roof insulation, solid wall insulation, external wall insulation and floor insulation. Multi-foil insulation is known for its high thermal performance and is often chosen for its effectiveness in reducing heat loss or gain in buildings.

Where to use Multi Foil Insulation

Multi Foil insulation is a versatile insulation product with a variety of uses so there are a multitude of different places it can be used. However, one of the main benefits of Multi Foil insulation is it’s slim profile relative to it’s efficacy, so it’s often used in places where traditional insulation would be unsuitable due to size or flexibility. Some common uses for Multi Foil insulation are:

How to Install Multifoil Insulation

There are many different methods to correctly installing Multi Foil insulation due to it’s variable uses, but one common technique used to insulate solid walls is to apply horizontally over battens secured to the wall, using staples or a nail gun to secure the insulation rolls. Each layer is overlapped and sealed with Insulation tape to form an airtight seal. It is then finished with counterbattens to ensure an air gap and a secure fit. In pitched roofing and over-joist flooring, a similar method is used. 

Benefits of Multi Foil Insulation

Multi Foil insulation is an innovative product with a variety of benefits that set it apart from other types of insulation. It’s biggest benefit is that it provides comparatively effective thermal insulation, with a much slimmer form factor than other types of insulation. This can be really helpful in situations where traditional forms of insulation would impact the available floor space  - particularly in solid wall conversions such as garages and garden rooms, or in van conversions or small loft conversions. 

Due to it’s slim form factor and general versatility, it’s also a very DIY-friendly product that can be cut with insulation scissors or a sharp utility knife, and attached with standard tools such as staples or a nail gun. 

Not only that, but due to it’s reflective and flexible nature, many types of multi-foil insulation serve a dual purpose as radiant barrier - actively reflecting heat back into the property and away from the property (keeping it cool in summer as well as warm in winter) - and as a vapour barrier when fitted with an airtight seal.
