What is 3x2 Timber in mm?

"3x2" represents the joist size in inches, equivalent to 47 x 75mm in metric measurements. However, due to regularisation in timber processing - ensuring uniformity along the joist's length - the "finished" size might be slightly smaller than the standard 47x75mm, often closer to 45mm x 70mm.

This slight size variance is minimal and typically inconsequential for the majority of projects. It's a standard characteristic of 47x75mm (3x2) timber joists.

What are 3x2 C16 Timber Joists Used For?

Commonly utilised in stud walling and partitioning, C16 timber has impressive strength, making it perfect for interior construction projects such as stud walling and partitioning, however it is not recommended for supporting a building's framework due to its size and strength grading.

What is Regularised Timber?

Across our website, many of our timber joists are described as "regularised," indicating that the timber's length has been machine-finished to ensure a consistent smoothness, length, and width along the joist. This process might slightly alter the final size of the product by a few millimetres. The most common grades of regularised timber joists are C16 and C24.

What Does Kiln Dried Mean?

The process of kiln drying involves placing cut timber boards in kilns, subjecting them to continuous, even heat to remove excess moisture from the fresh timber. This rapid process reduces weight, increases strength and straightness, making the timber easier to work with. In contrast, air-drying timber joists can take several months to a year, making it a significantly slower method.

What Lengths Do 3x2 C24 Timber Joists Come in?

We stock treated and untreated 3x2 regularised timber joists in a range of sizes: 2.4m, 3m, 3.6m, 4.2m, and 4.8m. While we aim to have all sizes in stock for delivery, there might be occasions where a longer length is substituted, such as if there's a delay or unavailability in your area.

What Does C16 Stand For?

In the UK, regularised timber is typically categorised into two grades: C16 or C24. The "C" designates the type of wood used (Conifer). The number indicates the strength grading - based on factors like imperfections, knots, etc., with C24 representing the stronger grade.

Usually, C16 timber joists find use in various wall and roofing applications, whereas C24 is reserved for high-strength needs such as roofing and flooring joists.

Do I Need Treated 3x2 Timber?

3x2 Timber C24 Regularised Sawn Joists are most commonly used for interior projects - if you project is likely to be exposed to moisture or insects, it is advised opt for 3x2 Treated Timber Joists
