What is Acoustic Roll Insulation?

Acoustic insulation is a type of building insulation that is designed with a primary purpose of muffling and absorbing sound between rooms and structures. This can come in many forms, but Acoustic Roll specifically is designed for application during the construction or renovation of a building’s interior, and is applied between floor and ceiling joists, or between studs in partition and stud walls to dampen sound within a building structure.

What Size is Knauf Acoustic Roll (75mm)?

Knauf Acoustic insulation roll consists of a pack of 1 “sheet” of insulation that is rolled together in a pack. They are pre-cut to 600mm wide to fit common joist and stud spacings, and measure 14500mm (14.5m) in length. These can be cut to fit the height of the stud wall cavity or length of the floor area with a sharp utility knife. Typically, in partition walls, you would select a thickness that corresponds to the depth of your cavity, although in walls and floors between dwellings, it is advised to leave an air gap between the insulation and the plasterboard.

Knauf Acoustic Roll Insulation

Knauf Acoustic Roll is an acoustic insulation roll designed for use within interior walls/floors and ceilings. It is made from a glass mineral wool, which is created by spinning molten glass into fibres, which are then compressed to create a soft and flexible wool-like batt or blanket. It works to reduce the sound transfer between structures due to the many air pockets within the spun “batt” which helps to dampen sound transfer and reduce reverberations which can create a hollow sound or magnify sound.

Being made from glass, it is a highly non-combustible material, achieving the highest “Euroclass A1” Resistance to Fire rating, and is bound with a patented ECOSE® binder which avoids added formaldehyde or phenol.

How to Use Knauf Acoustic Roll Insulation

You can easily install Knauf Acoustic Roll in stud and partition walls by measuring the height of the cavity (or length of the joist cavity) and cutting each roll to the corresponding length. It should then be pushed into the top of the partition cavity, taking care not to compress or crush the batt, and tuck in the roll along the length to ensure a snug fit. For angles, simply measure the angle and cut with a sharp utility knife.

What Thickness of Knauf Acoustic Insulation Roll?

Building regulations dictate that the density of Acoustic Roll should be at least 10kg/m³, so Knauf Acoustic Roll is manufactured to exceed this density. This means that a thickness that is similar to the depth of your stud wall centres is typically suitable. When the walls separate dwellings, such as in flats or conversions, it is generally advised to allow for an air gap, to further improve acoustic performance, in which case you may need to select a thickness slightly smaller than the cavity.
