What is Loft Insulation?

Loft insulation is a type of thermal insulation typically used in buildings to improve energy efficiency and reduce heat loss. Most modern loft insulation is made from mineral wool, which consists of tightly packed mineral fibers, usually made from materials like rock or glass, which create a barrier against heat transfer. This insulation is commonly installed in the loft or attic spaces of homes, laid between ceiling joists or rafters, to prevent heat from escaping through the roof. Mineral wool loft insulation is known for its excellent thermal performance, fire resistance, and sound absorption properties, making it a popular choice for both residential and commercial construction projects aiming to enhance comfort and energy savings.

What Sizes Does Loft Insulation Roll Come In?

We offer our Loft Insulation Rolls in a range of thicknesses:

100mm, 150mm, 170mm, 200mm.

Designed to fit the depth of your ceiling joists. Loft insulation Roll is unique in that it is perforated at multiple points along the breadth of the roll, to allow you to split them to fit the width of the space as required, or leave as full sheets.

How to Install Loft Insulation Roll

To install loft roll insulation, first, ensure safety gear like gloves, goggles, and a mask are worn. Measure the distance between the joists in the loft space and cut  or separate the insulation rolls accordingly. Unroll the insulation and fit it snugly between the joists, ensuring there are no gaps or spaces. Use a utility knife to trim any excess insulation if necessary. Take care not to compress the insulation excessively, as this can reduce its effectiveness.

Knauf Loft Insulation Roll

Our Knauf insulation is Knauf's Loft Roll 44, which is one of the most popular types of loft insulation and is sold in a variety of thicknesses from 100mm to 200mm to best suit your project. It is sold in a single roll that is perforated along it's length to allow it to be split into 2 x 570mm width or 3 x 380mm width pieces, depending on the size of your joist cavity. Knauf Loft insulation has a thermal conductivity of 0.044y W/mK and a fire rating of Euroclass A1.

Isover Loft Insulation Roll

Isover is an effective loft insulation roll made from glass mineral wool that is sold in a continuous roll. Similar to Knauf loft insulation roll, it is pre-perforated (3 x 386mm or 2 x 580mm widths) to allow you to adjust it to the spacing between your joists.

Why Loft Insulation Delivers Outstanding Returns

Immediate Impact on Energy Bills Proper loft insulation can reduce your heating costs by up to 25%, with most households saving £200-400 annually. In Britain's climate, where heating accounts for roughly 60% of household energy use, effective loft insulation represents one of the most cost-effective home improvements you can make.

Expert Knowledge for Optimal Results With decades of experience supplying insulation projects across the UK, we understand exactly which products perform best in British lofts. Our technical team combines practical installation knowledge with manufacturer expertise to ensure you achieve maximum thermal performance and long-term value.

Understanding Insulation Performance

Thermal Conductivity and U-Values Explained

Thermal conductivity (λ-value) determines how effectively insulation prevents heat transfer. Our premium glass wool products achieve λ-values as low as 0.032 W/mK, whilst mineral wool options typically range from 0.034-0.037 W/mK. Lower values mean better insulation performance and greater energy savings.

Current regulations require loft insulation to achieve U-values of 0.16 W/m²K or better. Our 270mm glass wool rolls easily exceed this requirement, achieving U-values around 0.11 W/m²K when properly installed. For maximum efficiency, our 300mm options achieve impressive U-values of 0.10 W/m²K.

Multi-Layer Systems: Maximum Efficiency

For ultimate thermal performance, our multi-layer approach combines different insulation thicknesses to achieve exceptional U-values whilst addressing thermal bridging through ceiling joists.

Typical Configuration:

  • Base Layer: 100mm between ceiling joists
  • Top Layer: 170-200mm across joists
  • Combined Performance: Achieves U-values as low as 0.09 W/m²K

This approach ensures consistent thermal performance across the entire loft area, eliminating cold spots that compromise overall efficiency.

Installation Excellence for Maximum Performance

Preparation and Safety

Before installation, assess ceiling load capacity, existing ventilation, and electrical installations. Essential PPE includes dust masks, safety goggles, protective clothing, and knee boards for safe joist movement. All electrical installations must comply with current wiring regulations.

Professional Installation Techniques

Gap-Free Installation: Achieving optimal performance requires eliminating gaps between insulation rolls. Our installation guides demonstrate professional techniques for cutting, fitting, and sealing insulation around obstacles.

Thermal Bridge Management: Ceiling joists create thermal bridges that compromise overall performance. Proper cross-layering techniques and joist-top insulation eliminate these weak points for consistent thermal performance.

Ventilation Maintenance: Maintaining adequate loft ventilation prevents condensation whilst preserving insulation performance. Our guidance covers eaves ventilation protection and ridge ventilation requirements.

Compliance and Performance Standards

Building Regulations Compliance

Current Part L requirements mandate minimum U-values of 0.16 W/m²K for loft insulation. Our standard 270mm installations comfortably exceed these requirements, whilst 300mm options approach Passivhaus standards. Ventilation requirements must be maintained when adding insulation, and our technical guidance ensures compliance whilst maximising thermal performance.
