What's 8x2 Timber in mm?

8x2 timber in mm is roughly 47x200mm in metric measurements. However, the actual size of 8x2 Timber in millimetres is actually slightly smaller due to the regularisation process that our structural timber undergoes. Regularisation involves machining the length of timber to achieve smooth and consistent dimensions throughout the length of timber.

As a result, the "finished" size might be a few millimetres smaller than 47x200mm, typically closer to 45mm x 195mm. This minor variance is generally insignificant in the majority of projects and is a standard characteristic of using 8x2 regularised timber joists.

What are 8x2 Treated Timber Joists Used For?

8x2 C24 Timber is a versatile product and is commonly used in structural framing projects and as joists due to its significant strength, but it is also ideal for projects such as decking frames. However, if using them in outdoor or high moisture environments, it is advisable to opt for treated timber which has some resistance to rot and pest attack.

What is Regularised Timber?

Our timber joists are often referred to as “regularised” - meaning the lengths of timber are machine-finished to achieve a smooth finish and a uniform dimensions along the length of the timber joist. This can impact the finished size of the product by a few millimetres. The most common types of regularised timber joists are C16 and C24.

What Does Kiln Dried Mean?

Kiln-dried refers to a process where timber or wood is placed inside a kiln to remove excess moisture from it. The controlled heat and airflow in the kiln facilitate faster and more uniform drying compared to air-drying methods. This process reduces the moisture content of the wood, making it lighter, stronger, less prone to warping or cracking, and more stable for various applications in construction, woodworking, or furniture making.

What Lengths Do 8x2 C24 Treated Timber Joists Come in?

Our 8x2 Timber joists is 4.8m in length. We try to keep all of these lengths in stock wherever possible, but on occasions where stock levels or availability in your area is low, we may substitute for a longer length.

What Does C24 Stand For?

UK regularised timber is commonly categorised into two grades: C16 or C24. The "C" specifies the wood type: Conifer. The numerical value denotes the bend strength (determined by factors like imperfections and knots) C24 is the stronger grade of the two.

Typically, C16 timber joists are used in wall and roofing applications, while C24 is favoured for situations requiring exceptional strength, notably in roofing and flooring joists.

Do I Need Treated 8x2 Timber?

8x2 timber is a suitable choice for various projects, however it is advisable to treat Timber Joists for any uses where they are likely to come into contact with moisture or pests, in which case, our Treated 8x2 Timber may be more suitable.
