What is 3x2 Treated Timber in mm?

"3x2" signifies the joist size in inches, equivalent to 47 x 75mm in metric dimensions. However, due to the mechanical finishing process of regularised timber, the "finished" size is slightly smaller, approximately 45mm x 70mm, ensuring a smooth and consistent size along the entire length of the timber.

The minimal variance in size typically has no substantial impact on the majority of projects utilising 47x75mm (3x2) regularised timber joists, as it is a standard aspect of this type of timber.

What are 3x2 C16 Treated Timber Joists Used For?

Frequently employed in stud walling and partitioning, C16 timber's remarkable strength renders it highly appropriate for interior construction purposes. While it's not advisable for supporting the building's structure, its treatment makes it suitable for various outdoor applications such as decking, fencing, sheds, pergolas, and numerous outdoor structures.

    What Does Kiln Dried Mean?

Timber that undergoes kiln drying is a favoured option for woodworking and construction projects, with multiple benefits over air-dried wood. The controlled conditions within a kiln facilitate faster and more consistent drying, reducing risks of warping, cracking, and other flaws common in air-drying practices. This uniform moisture content enhances wood stability and strength.

What Lengths Does 3x2 C16 Timber Joist Come in?

Our range of 3x2 timber spans lengths 2.4m, 3m, 3.6m, 4.2m and 4.8m. While we aim to uphold stock availability in all sizes for prompt delivery, there may be occasional delays or shortages in specific lengths. In such cases, we may substitute longer lengths to ensure timely delivery of your order.

    What Does C16 Stand For?

Timber undergoes grading based on strength and quality - the most common grades are C16 and C24. The “C” stands for Coniferous. These grades serve as indicators of the timber's ability to bear loads, especially under bending stress.

Primarily employed in construction for structural purposes, C16 and C24 play distinct roles. C24, the higher-grade option, is preferred for tasks demanding greater load-bearing capacity, such as expansive spans or heavier loads. Its superior resistance to bending makes it suitable for more rigorous construction applications.

In contrast, C16, though slightly less robust than C24, remains sturdy and widely utilised in wall and roofing applications where load requirements are less stringent. Both grades deliver dependable performance, yet the choice between them relies on the specific structural demands of the project.

Do I Need Treated 3x2 Timber Joists?

Our 3x2 Treated Timber is recommended for use in both internal and external applications. However, if your project involves potential moisture or pest issues, treated timber might be a more fitting choice. Treated timber's heightened resistance to moisture and pests makes it particularly well-suited for outdoor projects like decking, roofing, and similar applications.
