What is Soundproof Acoustic Plasterboard?

Soundproof acoustic plasterboard is a high-performance material specifically designed to reduce noise transmission between rooms and create a quieter indoor environment. Made with a denser core than standard plasterboard, it is ideal for both residential and commercial applications where sound insulation is a priority. At DIY Building Supplies, our range of soundproof acoustic plasterboard combines excellent soundproofing capabilities with ease of installation, making it the perfect choice for your construction or renovation projects.

Why Choose Soundproof Acoustic Plasterboard?

Soundproof acoustic plasterboard offers numerous benefits that make it an essential material for soundproofing solutions:

  1. Effective Noise Reduction: Significantly reduces airborne sound, such as voices and music, creating a more peaceful environment.
  2. High Density: The denser core enhances soundproofing and increases overall wall durability.
  3. Fire Resistance: Many soundproof acoustic plasterboards are designed to provide additional fire protection, offering both safety and functionality.
  4. Versatility: Suitable for walls, ceilings, and partition systems in a variety of settings.
  5. Ease of Installation: Designed to be cut and installed like standard plasterboard, it’s ideal for DIY and professional projects.
Applications of Soundproof Acoustic Plasterboard

Soundproof acoustic plasterboard is versatile and can be used in a wide range of settings, including:

  • Residential Homes: Ideal for reducing noise between rooms, such as bedrooms and living areas.
  • Home Theatres: Ensures excellent soundproofing for an immersive entertainment experience.
  • Office Spaces: Enhances privacy and minimizes distractions in open-plan or shared workspaces.
  • Commercial Buildings: Provides noise reduction in hotels, hospitals, and other environments where sound control is crucial.
  • Studios and Practice Rooms: Creates optimal acoustics for recording or rehearsing music.
How to Install Acoustic Plasterboard?

To install acoustic plasterboard, begin by measuring and cutting the boards to fit the wall or ceiling dimensions. Secure the boards to the wooden or metal studs using appropriate drywall screws, ensuring a tight fit to minimise gaps. For enhanced sound insulation, apply an acoustic sealant around the edges and any penetrations, such as electrical outlets. Use jointing tape and jointing compound to cover seams and screw heads, creating a smooth, seamless surface. Once the compound is dry, sand it down for a smooth finish. Dot and Dab should not be used for the installation of acoustic plasterboard.

 Types of Acoustic Plasterboard

We offer a range of different acoustic plasterboards, though some of the most popular are Knauf Soundshield and British Gypsum Soundbloc. Typically, they are heavier and denser than general use plasterboard, which creates the acoustic insulating properties. Though some brands may quote a specific acoustic performance, some are reluctant to provide a specific number as the performance of a board is reliant on the entire structure the board is a part of - so calculating acoustic performance is best done as a calculation for the entire wall or ceiling envelope. That said, “blue” plasterboard of varying brands tend to be largely the same in terms of construction.

We also offer an acoustic “plank” plasterboard that, in addition to being denser than general use plasterboard, is also thicker - at 19mm, which will generally increase the acoustic performance.
