Frequently Asked Questions

What is Multifoil Insulation?

Multifoil insulation is a high-performance, multi-layered material designed to provide exceptional thermal efficiency by reflecting radiant heat. It combines several layers of reflective foil, foam, and wadding to create a lightweight and versatile insulation solution. At DIY Building Supplies, our multifoil insulation products offer a cost-effective and space-saving way to enhance energy efficiency in your home or commercial property.

Why Choose Multifoil Insulation?

Multifoil insulation delivers numerous advantages, making it a popular choice for a variety of projects:

  1. Exceptional Thermal Performance: Reflects radiant heat to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures year-round, reducing energy consumption.
  2. Space-Saving Design: Its thin, multi-layer construction makes it ideal for areas where traditional bulky insulation might not be suitable.
  3. Lightweight and Flexible: Easy to handle, cut, and install, multifoil insulation is perfect for DIY enthusiasts and professionals alike.
  4. Moisture and Vapour Resistance: Acts as a barrier to moisture and vapour, helping to prevent condensation and improve the durability of your building.
  5. Versatility: Suitable for walls, roofs, floors, and even irregularly shaped spaces, providing a comprehensive insulation solution.
Applications of Multifoil Insulation

Multifoil insulation is incredibly versatile and can be used in various settings, including:

  • Roof Insulation: Ideal for both pitched and flat roofs, enhancing thermal efficiency while saving space.
  • Wall Insulation: Suitable for timber frame, solid, and cavity walls to improve energy performance.
  • Floor Insulation: Provides effective underfloor insulation with minimal thickness.
  • Loft Spaces: Perfect for insulating lofts without reducing usable space.
  • Sheds and Garden Rooms: Offers an easy-to-install solution for insulating outbuildings and other non-traditional spaces.
How to Install Multifoil Insulation

There are many different methods to correctly installing Multi Foil insulation due to it’s variable uses, but one common technique used to insulate solid walls is to apply horizontally over battens secured to the wall, using staples or a nail gun to secure the insulation rolls. Each layer is overlapped and sealed with Insulation tape to form an airtight seal. It is then finished with counterbattens to ensure an air gap and a secure fit. In pitched roofing and over-joist flooring, a similar method is used.

Benefits of Multi Foil Insulation

Multi Foil insulation is an innovative product with a variety of benefits that set it apart from other types of insulation. It’s biggest benefit is that it provides comparatively effective thermal insulation, with a much slimmer form factor than other types of insulation. This can be really helpful in situations where traditional forms of insulation would impact the available floor space  - particularly in solid wall conversions such as garages and garden rooms, or in van conversions or small loft conversions.

Due to it’s slim form factor and general versatility, it’s also a very DIY-friendly product that can be cut with insulation scissors or a sharp utility knife, and attached with standard tools such as staples or a nail gun.

Not only that, but due to it’s reflective and flexible nature, many types of multi-foil insulation serve a dual purpose as radiant barrier - actively reflecting heat back into the property and away from the property (keeping it cool in summer as well as warm in winter) - and as a vapour barrier when fitted with an airtight seal.
